What Does the Bible Say About Sin?
There are some topics we tend to avoid. Not because they’re unimportant…but because they’re uncomfortable.
And sin is one of them.
Most women I talk to fall into one of two places. Some have learned to minimize it; shrugging things off, softening the edges, convincing themselves it’s “not that serious.” Others feel the opposite—they carry it heavily. Quiet guilt. Lingering shame. A constant sense of not quite measuring up.
But Scripture doesn’t leave us in either extreme. It gives us something better. It gives us truth… and hope.
“My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin.
But if anybody does sin, we have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.
He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world.”
—1 John 2:1–2
And in just a few lines, everything comes into focus.
The Standard Hasn’t Changed
John begins with clarity.
“I write this to you so that you will not sin.”
There’s no softening here. No lowering of the bar. As followers of Jesus, we are called to live differently. Not casually brushing past sin. Not learning to manage it. But turning away from it. That word matters…turning. Because sometimes, if we’re honest, we want grace… without real change. We want to feel forgiven without actually surrendering the thing that needs to go. But God’s heart isn’t just to comfort you in your sin…it’s to lead you out of it. The call is still holiness. Not perfection… but transformation.
God Already Knows
And then, almost like a gentle hand on your shoulder, the tone shifts:
“But if anybody does sin…”
Not if you somehow manage to get it all right. Not if you become strong enough. But when you fall. Because you will. God is not surprised by your humanity. He already sees the places where you struggle. The habits that are hard to break. The thoughts you wish you didn’t have. The patterns you’ve wrestled with longer than you’d like to admit.
And instead of turning away from you…He made a way to bring you back.
You Have an Advocate
“We have an advocate with the Father—Jesus Christ, the Righteous One.”
That word, advocate, is powerful. It paints the picture of someone who steps in on your behalf. Someone who speaks for you when you don’t have a defense. Because let’s be honest, when we mess up, the accusations come quickly. From the enemy. From our own thoughts. Sometimes even from other people.
“You should have known better.”
“You’ll never change.”
“Look at you… again.”
But Jesus doesn’t stand at a distance shaking His head. He steps in. Not to excuse the sin…but to cover you with His righteousness. It’s as if He stands before the Father and says: “She belongs to Me. I’ve already paid for that.” And suddenly, your failure is no longer the final word.
The Price Was Already Paid
“He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins…”
This is where everything shifts.
Your forgiveness is not based on how well you perform this week. It’s not earned by getting it right more often than you get it wrong.
It’s rooted in what Jesus has already done. Fully. Completely. Once and for all. You don’t achieve forgiveness. You receive it.
But don’t miss this…Grace was never meant to keep you stuck. It was meant to set you free. Free from guilt. Free from shame. And yes—free from the power sin once had over you.
You Were Never Meant to Do This Alone
Here’s where many women quietly struggle:
They try to live right… in their own strength. More discipline. More effort. More “trying harder.” But holiness was never meant to be self-powered. You can’t force your way into transformation. You need Jesus, not just as Savior, but as your daily source. The strength to change… comes from staying connected.
Stay Close
So what does that actually look like?
It looks like staying close. Not out of obligation… but out of need. Opening your Bible—not to check a box, but to hear His voice.
Talking to Him throughout your day—not just in crisis, but in the ordinary.
Worshiping—not just with music, but with your attention, your affection, your focus.
Letting yourself be known in safe, godly community.
Because closeness changes desire. The nearer you are to Him…the less attractive sin becomes. Not because you’re forcing yourself to resist it…but because something better has captured your heart.
A Word for You Today
If you’ve been taking sin lightly…this is your invitation to come back. To realign. To remember who you’re called to be. But if you’ve been weighed down by guilt…this is your reminder: you are not alone, and you are not without help. You are called higher. But you are also deeply supported. Held. Covered. Advocated for. Right now.
Prayer
Jesus,
Thank You for loving us enough to call us higher… and loving us enough not to leave us there on our own.
Thank You for being our Advocate. For covering what we could never fix ourselves.
Help us to walk in righteousness—not by striving, but by staying close to You.
Draw our hearts back to You daily.
Strengthen us where we are weak.
And remind us that we are never alone in this.
In Jesus’ name,
Amen.
